The Urban2063 is a coalition led by the African Centre for Cities to promote the importance of sustainable urbanisation as central to Africa’s structural transformation in line with the vision of African Union’s Agenda 2063. It brings together 13 organisations from the African continent and beyond, working to ensure that Africa’s cities become drivers of growth, resilience, and equity.
The coalition is comprised of contributing partners that include: Africa Climate and Development Institute, Association of African Planning Schools, ARUP – Africa Region, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (Africa chapter), Centre for Sustainable Transitions – Stellenbosch University, Cityscapes, Climate KIC, Club of Rome (Africa Section), Urban Futures Studio – Utrecht University, Women in Employment Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO), World Resource Institute (WRI), Overseas Development Institute (ODI) & GSMA.
The work of the Urban2063 Coalition is grounded in rigorous scientific analysis, peer exchange, and narrative development. To foster an evidence-based debate across the African continent and with its global partners, it produced eight policy briefs on a series of closely linked topics – starting with a diagnostic view that outlines how various trends create a challenging context for the advancement of sustainable urbanisation. This is followed by the propositional perspective, providing an agenda for the work and partnerships of the Urban2063 Coalition.
For 2025, the coalition is focused on the deliberations of the G20, with a specific focus on the Urban 20 outcomes. As a lead up to the to the U20 Summit in Johannesburg in September 2025, the ACC and Development Bank of South Africa hosted a series of webinars that brought together leading experts to explore how Africa’s urban transformation can drive sustainable growth and unlock new opportunities.
