In 2014, the Urban Violence CityLab collaborated with the Tafelsig People’s Association (TPA),  First Community Research Centre (FCRC),  UCT TV Studio and the UCT Centre for Film and Media Studies on an initiative that equipped four young people with basic film-making and media skills. TPA is a community-based organisation that has been at the forefront of land and housing battles in Tafelsig and the greater Mitchells Plain area for the past 17 years. First Community Resource Centre is an NGO that works with at risk youth in Hanover Park, a township on the Cape Flats where gang-related violence is a big challenge.  UCT TV Studio and the Centre for Film and Media Studies run an annual  young filmmaker development programme called “Stepping Stone.”

In 2014, four young people, two from Freedom Park and two from Hanover Park participated in the Stepping Stone programme where they were equipped with film making and other skills.  This enabled them to produce two short films which tell stories about their lives, the challenges they face and the role of community-based organisations like the TPA and FCRC in addressing these challenges through initiatives like the Ceasefire programme in Hanover Park.  The Stepping Stones programme also has a ‘train-the-trainer’ component, which means, in the long-term, that these skills could be rolled out to other young people.
