Bio

David Njenga Muiruri is a University of Cape Town-University of Basel (UCT-UniBAS)Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the African Centre for Cities. He is an urbanist, critical cartographer, and a spatial planning practitioner. He completed his PhD in Post-Representational Cartography in 2025 at the Department of Architecture, KU Leuven, where he also obtained an Advanced Master of Human Settlements in 2018. Through various modes of counter-inquiries such as counter-mapping, counter and critical cartographies, his research explores creative epistemologies and decolonial approaches to understanding cities, territories, and their socio-spatial relations.

At ACC, David contributes to interdisciplinary work on Southern Urbanism, engaged scholarship, and pedagogy. Alongside pursuing his postdoctoral research on creative counter-inquiries, he supports the University of Basel’s Master of Critical Urbanisms track at ACC and ACC’s Master of Southern Urbanism through co-teaching, thesis supervision, and student mentorship. He also contributes to ACC’s wider intellectual community by sharing his research in internal and public forums and engaging with colleagues across the Centre’s areas of work.
